For the second time in our history we have been invited to play in the Horn Fair match a game of tradition that has gone on for over a hundred years. For ebernoe it was only the second time they have asked a team outside of the area and for us to be that team was a big honour. On a lovely sunny day after a day of rain on the friday we felt the toss would be a big factor into the game and how right we were to think that. Ebernoe put us into bat as we got of to a good start with Matt Hollier and Tyrone Carkeet opening the batting for Pilgrims . The first wicket went with the score on 51 Tyrone (9) bowled by O Rose.Craig Dennett joined Matt at the crease but 10 runs later Matt (40) was cought behind off the bowling of A.Read.Nick Birt was next in and found runs hard to get and although Nick and Craig put on 19 runs Nicks tally was only 2 but unfortunatley too many overs were used.80-3 soon became 82-4 as Craig (22) was caught of the bowling of D.Whittington.With only 7 overs left Trevor(22), Simon(4),Paul H(8) Paul R(11) and Lee hopkins (8 no) took the score up to 145-8 0f their alloted 40 overs.Al Read and Dave Whittington best of the Ebernoe bowlers with 18 overs between the pair of them for yeilded just 34 runs and 3 wickets. The traditonal lamb roast for dinner between innings went down very well and also the company of Mike Gatting joining us made an even better day.Ebernoe went into to bat chasing what we thought was not a big enough score but us being Wessex Pilgrims we never give in.Their first wicket D.Turner(30) fell on 53 with L.Hopkins taking a smart catch off the bowling of Paul Harding.Only 4 runs later Pilgrims claimed their second wicket S.Morrish(21) being bowled by Trevor Warren. Then a partnership of 63 between Oli Rose and Harry Marchant virtually sealed the victory for Ebernoe who were now 120-3. But a second spell from Simon Gnad(2-32) and a first spell for Harry Rendell(2-18) tried in vain to be the party poopers by taking three more of Ebernoes wickets for just 3 runs before Richard Stemp (15 no) and Matt Fauvet(4no) took ebernoe past the winning post and the end of yet another great game of many between these two sides. Fittingly for Oli Rose he won the Horns Trophy with his score of 42 but also it was Oli who put Ebernoe forward for the Teltley tea challange and Ebernoe were one of 6 finalist's. Hopefully ebernoe will win that challenge as I cant think of any other team that can put on a day like the Horn Fair which is so steaped in tradition. Good luck from all at Wessex Pilgrims. On one sad note for all the Pilgrims it was the first time we had gone to Ebernoe after the sad death of one of our greats Jocky Wilson I hope that you were looking down from above Jocky and enjoyed what you saw.We all love you Jocky RIP mate.
